Fuxian Lake and Daijie part 2

Did you like the super sad cliff hanger of a ending.  Yeah, that was on purpose.  Can’t always be humorous, got to mix up the human emotions from time to time, this occasion anger and melancholy and the infinite sadness (smashing pumpkins 90’s reference for you old folks reading).

Next day we take the bus and head back to Jiangchang and eat you guessed it – rice noodles and chicken for breakfast.  Hey that’s just like a dinner.

At home I try to eat muffins for breakfast. Just something about eating rice products early in the morning that doesn’t feel right.  Onward to Dajie now.

BTW in my pictures there are a couple statues of this bull on one side and a cat behind it almost like plowing the ground and a bull underneath the bigger front bull…I’ve seen it in 2 or 3 cities now.  Not sure what it means.. I should ask someone.

In Jiangchang we hiked about 2 or 3 hours though the outskirts of the city where the farms are and then up the mountain path to a village.  The view was beautiful from up top the mountain.  You could see a bit of the city in the distance but the trees and valley were great.

Even saw some eucalyptus trees.  The village itself was a farming village and we didn’t actually go to it, we staid on the trail and had a nice snack (moon cakes and a ginger drink).   Oh and at the lake area… a hotel down the street had a bowling alley but it was broke and since no one really used it, they decided to not even fix it.

Dajie is a couple streets bigger than where I live but this place is much nicer. The buildings seem more modern and clean looking, streets seem cleaner, more shopping, better stores, just a different atmosphere.  Plus, it’s 20 minutes from the lake and the big city of Yuxi.  To bad this place didn’t have a chiopractic hospital.

Ling doesn’t care for it much but I reckon that’s because she grew up there and everyone knows your business.  At first she was talking that I would stay at her house, but then I was thinking to myself.

I don’t know what kind of house they live, do they have room, is someone going to be sleeping on the floor so that I get a bed?  So I volunteered the idea of a hotel and she liked that idea too.  Turns out they had plenty of room at the house though.

Her mom doesn’t clean much so she was a little embarrassed by the place, but honestly it didn’t look bad to me.  I’ve been in much dirtier scary places than that in America (the places where you would rather stand than sit on the couch).

My hotel was pretty nice. I was able to wash my clothes in the sink, a couch and desk and tv were there as well as I’m guessing a queen size bed.  No a/c but none of the hotels in this city do.  It actually feels quite nice there compared to my city.

When we were walking the streets waiting on her dad to pick us up I took advantage of the festival sales and picked up a new pair of shoes. Mine were falling apart, literally.  I put my inserts in and I’m liking them.  The brand is deshun and mine are grey black and yellow meshy style.

Her dad is a taxi driver and he took us to where they live which is a village right outside the town.  He dropped us off at the front of the village because he was picking up his other daughter Charlie.  Anyway, on our walking I saw my favorite cow, the one with a hump and saggy chin.

On the way back to hotel at night, that cow was in pieces, somebody is eating well for the autumn festival.  We stop by her place then walk a bit further and go to her grandparents.  They live in one of those homes nestled with the farm.  Very simple but it works for them.

The fish was fresh, the pomegranate was picked in the backyard and the food was delicious. Even had 7 year old bijeau from his stash. It was strong.

After dinner the chickens were inside eating stuff and then all but one was let back out.  A bucket of water was drawn, and the chicken was outstretched, throat slit, bled out, it stopped twitching, and the cleaning began.  I heard that chicken was hao chi (delicious).

Next day I board a bus and go to Yuxi.  I pick up a polo for like 19 rmb and then get that call confirming that I must go back to town versus having lunch with Curt and going to Kunming.

Overall it was a good weekend and I was happy to spend it with a good friend.

  1. I was really excited to see pictures from Fuxian. I am sorry to hear about the boat driver guy and the homesickness though. I’ve seen some of your posts on FB with pictures and about the clinic. I hope all is well with the electricity and business!
