Which Vitamin Boosts the Immune System

New research has recently been published that shows some amazing
facts about Vitamin D, and just how important it is to your health.

The study showed that Vitamin D is CRUCIAL to your health and the
function of your immune system. They found that Vitamin D
activates your immune system to respond to and destroy invading
microorganisms. It also balances your immune system to avoid a
dangerous inflammatory response.

Wow. Pretty cool to know that Vitamin D is so powerful. And
here’s where it gets even more interesting – the research showed
that Vitamin D’s ability to boost your immune system and fight off
things like the flu (and swine flu) has been conserved in the
genome for 60 million years.

Researchers say the fact that this Vitamin D immune response has
been retained through millions of years of evolutionary selection,
and is still found in species ranging from small animals like
squirrels and monkeys all the way up to humans suggests that
Vitamin D must be critical to survival.

“The existence and importance of this part of our immune response
makes it clear that humans and other primates need to maintain
sufficient levels of vitamin D,” said Adrian Gombart, an associate
professor of biochemistry and a principal investigator with the
Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University.

What this new information on Vitamin D reveals is that if you don’t
have sufficient levels of Vitamin D circulating in your blood, then
you are a BIG TARGET for the flu (regular or swine). If you lack
Vitamin D, your immune system can’t “activate” to do its job.
That’s why people who don’t have enough Vitamin D in their body so
often get winter colds.

However, if your body is high in Vitamin D, you have the power to
activate your immune system so it can respond to invading viruses
and pathogens.

There are two sources of Vitamin D – sunlight exposure and Vitamin
D supplements. If you work inside every day, then you’ll probably
need to take Vitamin D supplements, unless you are getting 30 to 45
minutes of sunlight each and every day.

The recommended amount of Vitamin D to take is 1000- 4000 IU a day
just to prevent deficiency. Taking 1000- 4000 IU a day will
prevent you from having a Vitamin D deficiency.
