11:07 AM

The other day I did a hike with Duan and Ada and Kurt.  We walked about an hour to the mountain and then climbed 500 steps up to a temple.  It gave spectacular views of the city and river.  Then we walked back and she treated us to chinese bbq.  But really we got chicken soup and a fried rice with veggies in it.  Kurt and I bought a bottle of wine to share.  They seemed to like that.  It wasn’t great but not horrible either.

On the 6th, Ada said hey you want to hike again.  OF COURSE.  We went an hour down the street toward Hongta.  I posted a couple pics of the nice houses. She said they were funded by the government for foreigners to live.  Apparently they cost a good bit too.  But it is like duplex size living.

Across the street I noticed a water slide.  Ada replied, “the owner gambled a lot and so the place shut down.” That was really to bad because it had a few slides and a pirate ship for kids etc.  Real nice palm trees still there though.

Before we left the main drag we got a flyer for a new diner.  We called a couple people to meet us because it was on the way home.  This place serves green, red, blue, black and yellow beer.  Well, blue is blueberry.  So in america I had some great blueberry beer so I was like let’s get that, without trying any.  Ada didn’t object so I figured that it was a good choice.

So it’s just me and her for about ten minutes.  They bring out this 3 liter jug of it. Seemed like it had a yellow color and really just tasted like beer not much flavor.  I just spent 40 rmb on it. SO we discussed it and I went up and tried red and black.

And wow the black tasted like a bit of coffee and red was sweet.  Went sit back down… realized I spent like 6.50  and was like NO, life is to short to drink blah tasting drink with friends.

I went back up and said I want the red but only half.  Then ada came up and really explained what I wanted.  They pour me another sample and it sure tasted good and seemed to be a dark purple color.

Diner staff made a mistake and poured the wrong drink so BAM they replaced it, but I owed another 20.

Everyone arrives we order some blueberry bread stuff, fish, etc and at this point I’ve had 2-3 drinks (maybe six oz each).  I’m like ok justin pace yourself this could hit you any moment…like a long island icetea…. Well it never did.

Come to find out it was just a drink no alcohol.  Needless to say me and Duan left with our belly really full of sugar.  LOL  so silly.

Next day.  Ling (catherine) said hey that patient you helped get rid of vertigo for… she wants to have us over for lunch.  Yes mame.  We go down the ally next to bank of china and it was kind of a scary type place. But whatever its day light.

Well, I got to make dumplings.  Took me a while to get the hang of how the host folded it, but I did and I think that made her smile.  Pork dumplings, cooked real fast and was just plain yummy.  That and fresh cooked sweet potatos, they are more root shaped than what we would think of a baked potato.  No Montasano making these gigantic I guess.

Diner Chew Lu took me out with Ling and Ada.  I excused myself like I was going to the WC (bathroom) and went try to pay the bill.  But the staff all shock their heads and arms and would not let me pay.  Somehow I need to pay the guy back a little.

Technically next week I am supposed to be cooking american food and supplying red wine.  That will just have to do.  Very generous people here.

The people who don’t even make much money continually surprise me by paying for my food and they will not take your money.  When you try to pay their meal later… sometimes you can, other times not so much.2013-09-06 19.04.11 2013-09-06 20.14.35 2013-09-07 10.52.49 2013-09-07 11.09.05

  1. Indeed; a recent study mentioned on NPR pointed out that those with smaller incomes absolutely donate a larger percentage of them. I think it has to do with understanding what it’s like to have nothing or not having whatever you want, when you want. Compassion is a wonderful thing, isn’t it? Nice try to pay the bill! I love reading about your experiences. 😉 Thanks very much for sharing. *hugs*
