What’s Healthier Egg Whites or The Whole Egg?

When it comes to eating eggs, there are all sorts of myths and confusions. You’ll hear some people say to only eat egg whites. Others will tell you to avoid egg yolks because they have fat in them and they raise your cholesterol. Have you heard any of these before?

So what’s the truth? Should you be eating only egg whites, or should you be eating the entire egg, including the yolk?

The truth is, the yolk is where all the nutrition is. The yolk is the healthiest part of the egg.

The yolk is nutrient dense, anti-oxidant rich, and vitamin and mineral loaded. There are B vitamins, vitamin A, folate, choline, lutein, trace minerals, and a number of other powerful nutrients.

The yolk contains more than 90% of the calcium, iron, phosphorus, zinc, thiamin, B6, folate, B12, and pantothenic acid of the egg. They also contain all the fat soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K in the egg.

Here’s another truth…the egg white almost have no nutrition compared to the yolk. Even though the egg whites have protein, they still aren’t as nutritious as the yolk.

One of the biggest objections to egg yolks is that they will raise your cholesterol. This is simply not true.

When you eat a food that has a high level of dietary cholesterol like egg yolks, your body decreases its internal production of cholesterol to balance your cholesterol level. And if you don’t eat enough cholesterol, then your body just increases its production. There are also some indications that eating whole eggs raises your good HDL cholesterol level.

So the next time someone tells you that egg yolks aren’t good for you, just ignore them. And when you buy your eggs, try to buy organic eggs from free range chickens. Those are the healthiest.
